Worth Checking Out: Black Hills Park

By Sarah LaManna, Contributor October 6, 2022

One of the best parts about living in Germantown is the abundance of trails and parks to visit with your family. My favorite park is Back Hills Regional Park. (20930 Lake Ridge Dr, Boyds, MD 20841) There are a variety of reasons why my family and I love coming here. First off is the proximity to our house. Did you know that from many neighborhoods, you can walk to the park? This can be done using the Crystal Rock trail, or the trail that surrounds Little Seneca Lake. If walking isn’t right for you, there are many parking lots to choose from depending on what activities you would like to do.

Black Hills boasts two playgrounds complete with slides and swings, picnic shelters and tables, a dog park, and miles of trails. During the warmer months you can even by sign up through the Montgomery County Parks website and spend some time on Little Seneca Lake enjoying a pontoon cruise. There are also boats and bikes available to rent.

We can’t talk about our love for Black Hills without mentioning the Visitor Center. First of all, they have an educational corner that is perfect for kids to cool off at and enjoy observing animals and learning more about nature. The visitor center also has a great view of Little Seneca Lake. Outside, you can find a sandbox, a fairy garden, and more to explore with young children. I have taken my boys to several events put on through the visitor center including listening to harpists, Babes in the Park, and Nature Babies. (All details can be found on the events calendar.)

If you live in the Germantown/ Clarksburg areas, do yourself and your family a favor and check out Black Hills park. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
